LCD shipments in Taiwan fell in the second quarter

According to a survey released by IDC Taiwan, total PC display shipments in Taiwan's closed and open markets reached 386,248 units in the second quarter, down 0.4% from the previous quarter and 9.1% from the same period last year.
 
 
 
In the open market, LCDs are sold through three major 3C (computer, communications and consumer electronics) distribution channels, with major brands including Viewsonic, Chimei, Samsung and BenQ. Closed-market displays come with PC packs from the same brands, including Acer, Lenovo and HP.
 
 
 
This quarter, Taiwan LCD market open business section needs more than the first quarter, but with the second quarter as income tax payment period, consumers worry about inflation, and the thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) panel are continuing cause many factors, such as weak market forecasts household part tepid demand.
 
 
 
As a result, the open display market shipped 310,542 units in the quarter, down 4.4% from the previous quarter and 15.4% from the same period last year. Driven by the government bidding program, closed market shipments reached 74,451 units, up 20.6% from the previous quarter and 35.4% from the same period last year.
 
 
 
Shipments of 17-inch LCDs increased 26.2 percent from the first quarter, and their global market share increased to 16.1 percent, as commercial segment demand continued to expand.
 
 
 
Sales of 22-inch widescreen products increased 29.6% from the first quarter to 22.7% of the total market in the second quarter. In contrast, other sizes of products shipments and market share have declined.
 
 
 
Shipments of 20-inch widescreen products increased to 6.7% in the second quarter from 9.0% in the first three months, as shipments of 22-inch widescreen products continued to be hurt by price cuts.
 
 
 
In the second quarter, sales fell for all but a few manufacturers. The top four players during the period were Viewsonic, Asustek, Acer and Chimei.
 
 
 
Kim Hye-jin, senior PC market analyst at IDC Taiwan, noted that panel prices continued to fall in the second quarter, causing downstream display distributors to hold back from placing drastic orders for fear of further declines. Consumers are also starting to hesitate to see if market prices will continue to fall. However, she stressed that IDC Taiwan expects demand in the commercial sector to remain stable in the second half.
